This is an urgent call to direct the attention of Imo State Government and citizens on the pressing need for more investment in girl child education and empowerment programs.

In line with the national theme for the 2023 International Day of the Girl Child (Invest in Girls’ Right- Our leadership, our well-being), CARA is calling the attention of Imo State government and its citizens to the educational discrimination and limited access to empowerment opportunities faced by the girl child. Girls account for 60% of Nigeria’s 10 million out-of-school children, facing barriers such as child marriage, poverty and discriminatory social norms. 30% of girls aged 9-12 have never been to school at all[i].

According to the United Nations, investing in girls’ education and empowerment leads to reduced poverty, improved health and nutrition, lower child and maternal mortality rates, and overall economic growth. However, due to existing gender norms and stereotypes, girls face societal pressures and expectations that negatively impact their mental health and self-esteem.

Girls have the right to equal opportunities and access to education, health care, and other essential services. Girls have the right to participate in decision-making processes that affect them, including political, economic, and social spheres. Girls have the right to live free from violence, discrimination, and harmful practices such as child marriage and female genital mutilation. Empowered girls can break the cycle of poverty and discrimination, leading to a more prosperous and equitable world.

Girls’ well-being is closely tied to equal access to education and women’s empowerment.
